Skyrocket Juniper - The Landscape Pine

The scientific name of the tree is Juniperus Scopulorum. It belongs to the family of Cupressaceae trees. This evergreen tree grows up to the height of about 30 to 40 feet but it is hardly 2 feet wide at the base. The spread of the tree varies from 3 feet to 12 feet. The tree is a native to the eastern foothills of Rocky Mountains in North America and available in all nurseries.

The skyrocket juniper is a popular upright tree for landscaping. The foliage of the tree varies from silvery blue to bluish green and golden at times. The tree is one of the ornamental trees and most of the entryways have these trees as the decorative. This variety of tree also covers the walls of some of the tallest buildings.

Tree Blue

Just like other junipers, skyrocket juniper is also fast-growing specie. It is not a good tree for wind breaking as it is extremely narrow in structure. In fact, it is one of the narrowest trees. The tree looks great in the properties of mid west. Most of the properties here have Mediterranean influence in the design and architecture. The tree will also look good in the gardens or other spaces that already have plenty of horizontal space and vertical space is lacking. The growth of the tree is dense and because of this, the birds and other wildlife are often flocking the tree.

It is very easy to grow a skyrocket juniper. The tree is able to tolerate extremely dry conditions. In fact, the tree prefers to grow in drier climates such as Mexico and Colorado. The tree can also adapt to moist conditions and responds well to extreme cold as well. The tree however, cannot tolerate extreme humid conditions or wet soils. These factors may cause the decline of the tree. The skyrocket juniper requires full sun for proper growth. The tree grows well in the USDA hardiness zones varying from 4 to 9. The characteristics of this tree include its columnar shape and low maintenance. The tree can tolerate drought conditions, pollution, rabbits, deer, and strong winds. It can grow on the slopes and rocky edges of the hills.

The opposite leaves of the skyrocket juniper are like scales, closely pressing to the stems of the tree. The green acicular leaves are usually bluish at the ends. The branches of the tree are vertical in their growth and have a medium texture. The flowers of this tree are yellow in color. The male flowers only have about 6 stamens. The fruits on this tree are rounded and they contain two seeds. The berries of the tree take about two years to reach maturity. The color of the fruits on this tree is deep blue. The tree is prone to canker and juniper blights. The pollen in the tree may cause skin irritation to some people. Full exposure to the sun dries the tree and prevents foliage diseases from thinning the tree.

You can plant Sky Rocket Juniper in your gardens easily. To protect the plant from extreme cold, you must cover the roots with dry straw. However, do not forget to place the plant in sunlight during the day.
